Ren Meguro: Rising Star of Japanese Entertainment | Spotlight on Best Works

The world of Asian entertainment is brimming with talented actors on the rise. In this new series on our blog, I’ll be turning the spotlight on some of these up-and-coming stars. First up, we head to Japan to meet the captivating Ren Meguro!

Born in Tokyo in 1997, Meguro’s journey began in 2010 when he joined the talent agency Johnny & Associates (now known as Starto Ent.). He honed his skills as a trainee under the agency’s Junior program before officially joining the pre-debut unit Uchuu Six in 2016.

Meguro’s breakout moment came in 2019 when he was chosen as a new member of the idol group Snow Man. Snow Man’s official debut in 2020 solidified Meguro’s place in the spotlight. However, his acting career truly exploded later in 2021 with his starring role in the Netflix series Kieta Hatsukoi (My Love Mix-Up). Let’s take a closer look at the notable projects that have shaped his acting journey:

Kieta Hatsukoi (2021)

This charming coming-of-age, rom-com story captivated audiences and introduced viewers to Meguro’s talent. Ren Meguro plays the role of Ida Kousuke. Presented as handsome, intelligent, and radiating kindness – Meguro imbues Ida with a quiet magnetism that draws both characters and viewers alike. Meguro totally sells this perfect prince vibe. His gentle smile as he tutors Aoki and his unwavering support throughout the whole classroom chaos? Can’t get enough.

The subtlety of Ida’s character is perfectly captured by Ren Meguro’s performance. Gentle, polite, and always supportive of Aoki’s emotions, Ida is a textbook green flag character. Meguro injects fleeting moments of concern into Ida’s eyes, a hint of vulnerability that betrays his own feelings. These subtle movements and hesitations hint at a deeper complexity of his character. The use of nonverbal cues keeps us guessing about Ida’s true feelings, making him a captivating enigma as the story unfolds.

Silent (2022)

This critically acclaimed drama presented a different side of Meguro’s acting range. He delivers a powerful and nuanced performance as Sou Sakura, a young man—a lively and popular athlete—grappling with sudden deafness. Sakura presents a complex and emotionally charged character. Meguro masterfully portrays Sakura’s internal struggles – the isolation, frustration, and flashes of vulnerability.

His expressive eyes and subtle shifts in body language become his primary tools for communication, allowing him to convey a depth of emotion that transcends spoken dialogue. Whether it’s the quiet yearning for connection or the frustration of a misunderstood gesture, Meguro’s performance makes Sakura’s journey both relatable and deeply moving.

This exceptional portrayal earned Meguro well-deserved recognition, including the Newcomer Award at the 31st Hashida Awards, Best Supporting Actor at the 114th The Television Drama Academy Awards, and Tokyo Drama Awards 2023.

Check out Silent if you want to watch a heartfelt story, an exploration of communication, empathy, and navigating life with hearing loss.

As Long As We Both Shall Live (2023)

Meguro took on the role of Kudo Kiyoka, a seemingly stern and cold army commander with a gentle side, who enters into a marriage of convenience in the film adaptation of popular anime My Happy Marriage. This role allowed him to showcase his ability to portray a character with unexpected layers. While initially appearing stoic and reserved, Meguro’s portrayal reveals Kiyoka’s hidden warmth and vulnerability, particularly through his interactions with Miyo as the story unfolds.

The contrast between his imposing stature and the tenderness he shows towards his wife as he opens up to her is a key element of the film’s charm. Meguro’s nuanced portrayal allows viewers to witness Kiyoka’s transformation from a seemingly cold figure to a supportive and protective husband. This captivating performance adds depth to the character and strengthens the emotional core of the film.

But Meguro doesn’t just excel in quiet moments. The film has its action scenes as well, such as when Miyo’s life is threatened or when Kiyoka confronts grotesque threats, transforming into a formidable warrior. We witness Kiyoka’s prowess and protectiveness in these action sequences.

If you want to watch a fantasy film with romance, action, beautiful visuals, and impressive acting, be sure to check this one out.

Trillion Game (2023)

Trillion Game is about two ambitious friends who team up to build their own business with the goal of earning a trillion dollars. The series blends elements of drama, business, and even a touch of thriller, keeping viewers engaged. At the heart of the story is Haru, a character described as someone who can win anyone over, regardless of age or background. This charm is perfectly captured by actor Ren Meguro.

Meguro’s performance goes beyond mere likability. He subtly conveys Haru’s underlying ambition and determination through nuanced expressions and delivery. Meguro’s performance effectively portrays the duality of Haru: lighthearted and charming one moment, he can switch to portray unwavering focus and even ruthlessness when the situation demands it.

Meguro’s portrayal of this complexity is a big reason why the character resonated with viewers. This role served as another feather in Meguro’s cap, showcasing his growing range as an actor. If you want a complete entertainment package, be sure to give Trillion Game a go.

A Rising Star: A Look at Meguro’s Bright Future

Meguro’s on-screen presence is undeniable. He possesses a quiet intensity that draws viewers in and a captivating aura that makes him impossible to ignore. Meguro’s ability to effortlessly transition between vulnerability and strength breathes life into his characters.

Looking ahead, Meguro’s future is bright. He’s confirmed to have a new project airing this summer, Umi no Hajimari (2024), where he plays an ordinary working adult who unexpectedly discovers he has a daughter at his ex-girlfriend’s funeral. The production team behind Umi no Hajimari is the same one who brought us Meguro’s previous hit drama, Silent (2022). I for one can’t wait to watch it!!
